Interaction Design in Depth: Forms, States, and Motion

An intermediate course in designing complex forms with validation, error recovery, and progressive disclosure, specifying complete component state machines covering loading, empty, error, and success states, and using motion and microinteractions purposefully with accessibility in mind.

By the end of this course you can design forms that earn a user's trust, specify complete component state machines that hold up under real use, and use motion and microinteractions purposefully and accessibly, everywhere a product genuinely benefits from them.

01How to design complex forms with correct field fundamentals, well-timed inline validation, progressive disclosure, sensible grouping and layout, minimized required fields, reduced re-entry, and graceful failed-submission recovery
02How to specify a component's full state machine, including loading, empty, error, success, and disabled states, optimistic UI with a visible rollback, and a mapped state diagram before building
03How to use motion and microinteractions purposefully, including easing and duration, microinteraction anatomy, accessibility and reduced-motion support, motion for state transitions, performance budgets, and sound and haptic feedback
04How to trace a single continuous design effort, spanning forms, component states, and motion, through a real, growing product end to end

Completed Course progress automatically counts toward the Career Path when this Course belongs to a Mission.

07
What You'll Gain
  • Builds directly on the prototyping and design-systems courses in this curriculum
  • Every pattern is grounded in a concrete form, component, or interaction, not abstract theory
  • Every lesson ends with a worked example you can practice on
  • Covers the full path from a single form field to a fully specified, motion-aware interactive product
Who Is This Course For?
  • Intermediate learners who have completed this curriculum's prototyping and design-systems courses and now want to specialize in interaction design
  • Career switchers building a focused interaction-design skill set for a portfolio
  • Product designers and front-end engineers who ship forms and stateful components without formal interaction-design training
  • Students preparing for a dedicated interaction designer or product designer role
Course Features
  • 30 short, focused lessons across 3 progressive levels
  • A graded quiz after every lesson and a 12-question exam per level
  • Three continuous worked examples (a property-rental booking form, a collaborative document editor's comment component, and a full expense-reporting app) threaded through the closing lessons
  • No specific tool required — this course builds transferable interaction-design judgment first
