Usability Principles and Heuristic Evaluation

A foundations course in usability: the precise ISO 9241-11 definition of usability, the ten Nielsen usability heuristics, and the systematic practice of planning, running, rating, and reporting a heuristic evaluation so its findings actually get acted on.

12 hours (approximately)3 Levels · 30 Lessons
03

By the end of this course you can run a complete heuristic evaluation from scratch: defining usability precisely for a specific context, applying all ten heuristics systematically, rating and consolidating findings from multiple evaluators, and presenting a report that gets prioritized and acted on rather than filed away.

01How to define usability precisely using the ISO 9241-11 dimensions and diagnose common usability failures by root cause
02How to apply Nielsen's ten usability heuristics to find structural problems in a real interface
03How to plan a heuristic evaluation, recruit and run independent evaluators, and consolidate their findings
04How to rate severity, write actionable findings, and present a report stakeholders actually act on
05How heuristic evaluation compares to usability testing, and how to run evaluation as an ongoing practice

What You'll Gain
  • Builds directly on the interaction-design and wireframing foundations courses in this curriculum
  • Grounded in established practice: the ISO 9241-11 standard and Nielsen's widely used heuristics
  • Every lesson ends with a worked example you can practice on
  • Covers the full path from definition to a delivered, actionable report, not heuristics in isolation
Who Is This Course For?
  • Beginners who have completed the earlier foundations courses in this curriculum and now want to evaluate existing designs rigorously
  • Career switchers building practical heuristic-evaluation skills for a portfolio
  • Product managers and engineers who want to review, or contribute usefully to, usability discussions
  • Students preparing for further usability-testing and research coursework
Course Features
  • 30 short, focused lessons across 3 progressive levels
  • A graded quiz after every lesson and a 12-question exam per level
  • A worked example in the closing lesson of every level, ending with a full evaluation of a bilingual banking app's money-transfer flow
  • No design software required — this course is conceptual, building judgment and vocabulary first
