Information Architecture Essentials

A foundations course in information architecture: how to organize, label, and structure content so people can find what they need, how to validate a proposed structure with card sorting and tree testing, and how to design navigation that works across devices and stays consistent as content grows.

12 hours (approximately)3 Levels · 30 Lessons

By the end of this course you can take a real, growing content collection and organize it end to end: audit and inventory it, choose organizing principles and a taxonomy, validate the structure with real people, design navigation that works on desktop and mobile, and set up governance so the structure stays healthy over time.

01How to organize content with sound principles, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies
02How to write labels people recognize instantly, and use metadata and site maps effectively
03How to run and analyze open card sorts, closed card sorts, and tree tests
04How to design global, local, contextual, and utility navigation, plus search, filters, and mobile patterns
05How to keep a structure consistent across devices and govern it so it does not decay as content grows

What You'll Gain
  • Builds directly on the design-thinking and research foundations courses in this curriculum
  • Grounded in established information-architecture practice: card sorting, tree testing, faceted navigation
  • Every lesson ends with a worked example you can practice on
  • Sets up later Interaction Design and Usability Testing courses without overlapping them
Who Is This Course For?
  • Beginners who have completed the design-thinking and research foundations courses and now want structure-and-navigation skills
  • Career switchers building practical taxonomy, labeling, and navigation-design skills
  • Product managers and engineers who want to evaluate or contribute to a site's structure competently
  • Students preparing for further usability-testing and interaction-design coursework
Course Features
  • 30 short, focused lessons across 3 progressive levels
  • A graded quiz after every lesson and a 12-question exam per level
  • A worked walkthrough in the closing lesson of each level, ending in a capstone on a growing e-commerce catalog
  • No design software required — this course is conceptual, building structure and judgment first
