Design Leadership and DesignOps

An advanced course on leading a design team and the organization around it: running critiques and giving feedback that genuinely improve the work, mentoring designers while managing them fairly, delegating without losing accountability, and handling underperformance directly; building DesignOps foundations — rituals calibrated to real team size, a deliberately chosen tool stack, fair hiring, usable career ladders, fast onboarding, honest maturity assessment, and sustainable resourcing; and communicating design's value to executives and stakeholders through business-language translation, a consistent narrative, effective presentation, genuine engagement with pushback, real business cases for budget, and durable, evidence-based trust.

By the end of this course you can lead a design team through critique, mentorship, delegation, and difficult performance conversations, build DesignOps foundations — rituals, tooling, hiring, career ladders, onboarding, maturity assessment, and resourcing — that genuinely scale with a growing team, and communicate design's value to executives and stakeholders in a way that earns real budget, headcount, and durable trust, turning individual design skill into an organizational practice that grows in influence rather than staying capped at what one person can personally produce.

01How to lead critiques, mentor designers, and grow team capability, including recognizing what actually changes about the job when moving from individual contributor to leader, running a critique that converges on a real decision instead of collecting scattered opinions, giving feedback that is specific, actionable, and calibrated to a designer's actual level, distinguishing mentoring from managing and their different obligations, setting real growth goals and tracking honest progress, delegating a decision without losing quality or accountability, handling underperformance directly, fairly, and without avoidance, building a team culture where critique feels genuinely safe, and tracing common mistakes back to the specific discipline each one reverses
02How to build DesignOps foundations, including understanding DesignOps as operational infrastructure that exists to free designers for actual design work, calibrating rituals to a team's real size and need rather than copying another company's playbook, choosing and maintaining a tool stack deliberately, hiring designers through an honest role description and a fair, structured process, writing career-ladder criteria a designer can actually act on, onboarding a new designer quickly and deliberately, honestly assessing a team's design maturity and choosing a realistic next step, resourcing a team sustainably with real slack for the inevitable, and tracing common mistakes back to the specific discipline each one reverses
03How to communicate design's value to executives and stakeholders, including recognizing why good design is never self-evident to an executive, translating design work into the specific business metrics an executive already tracks, building a design leader's own plain-language narrative, presenting design work effectively by opening with the recommendation and cutting process detail, handling real executive pushback by engaging the actual disagreement, securing budget and headcount with an actual business case, building genuine executive trust through consistent, credible communication over time, reporting design's impact with real evidence rather than a polished screenshot alone, and tracing common mistakes back to the specific discipline each one reverses
04How to trace a single continuous practice spanning team leadership, DesignOps foundations, and executive influence together through a real, evolving fictional company's decisions, from leading a critical project through building operational infrastructure to genuine organizational influence

Course Features
  • 30 short, focused lessons across 3 progressive levels
  • A graded quiz after every lesson and a 12-question exam per level
