Advanced Accessibility and WCAG 2.2 Conformance

An advanced course in accessibility rigor beyond the POUR-and-basic-ARIA foundation: auditing a real product against WCAG 2.2 A/AA and knowing precisely when AAA applies, designing and specifying accessible components with correct ARIA semantics and standard keyboard patterns, and operationalizing accessibility with real assistive-technology testing, VPATs, and team processes that survive contact with a real, changing organization.

By the end of this course you can audit a real product against WCAG 2.2 with a defensible, prioritized report, specify accessible components precisely enough that an engineer never has to guess a keyboard behavior or an ARIA attribute, and operationalize accessibility with real assistive-technology testing, a living VPAT, genuine review gates, and progress metrics leadership can actually act on.

01How to audit rigorously against WCAG 2.2, including setting a real conformance target, using the four POUR principles as a diagnostic lens, what WCAG 2.2 specifically adds, running a keyboard, screen-reader, and zoom pass in the correct sequence, knowing what automated tools do and do not catch, prioritizing findings by whether they block a task, writing an audit report a team can act on, and knowing precisely when AAA applies
02How to design and specify accessible components, including when ARIA helps versus actively breaks assistive technology, preferring semantic HTML first, standard keyboard interaction patterns, accessible forms, established ARIA authoring patterns for comboboxes, modals, and tabs, contrast beyond body text, motion and vestibular safety at the component level, and writing engineering annotations precise enough to remove all guesswork
03How to operationalize accessibility, including testing with real assistive technology beyond a single screen reader, recruiting and fairly compensating disabled testers, what a VPAT documents and who requests one, working legal and regulatory context, building accessibility into a design system, accessibility champions with genuine authority, handling a regression without reintroducing it, and reporting progress with metrics that mean something
04How to trace a single continuous effort spanning rigorous auditing, precise component specification, and genuine operationalization together through a real, evolving organization from initial audit to a mature accessibility practice

What You'll Gain
  • Builds directly on this curriculum's foundational accessibility course rather than repeating its ground
  • Every pattern is grounded in a concrete audit finding, component specification, or operational fix, not abstract theory
  • Every lesson ends with a worked example you can practice on
  • Covers the full path from an undefined "accessible-ish" claim to a genuinely operational, defensible accessibility practice
Who Is This Course For?
  • Advanced learners who have completed this curriculum's foundational accessibility course and already know POUR principles, basic ARIA, and basic contrast requirements
  • Senior or lead designers and engineers responsible for a product's genuine, defensible WCAG conformance, not just a general sense that it "cares about accessibility"
  • Accessibility specialists and champions building or scaling review gates, design-system rigor, and testing practices for a growing team
  • Design-system owners and engineering leads who need component-level accessibility specifications precise enough to implement without guessing
Course Features
  • 30 short, focused lessons across 3 progressive levels
  • A graded quiz after every lesson and a 12-question exam per level
  • Three continuous worked examples (auditing against WCAG 2.2, specifying accessible components, and a full course capstone spanning all three levels) for a fictional government-services portal, CivicLink, threaded through the closing lessons
  • Assumes prior knowledge of POUR, basic ARIA, and basic contrast — goes straight to audit rigor, precise specification, and operationalization
